SFI D for citizenship: does the exam count as proof of Swedish in 2026?

By Mikkel Gerdes, Kliently. Published 2 November 2026.

Short answer: a passed SFI D exam shows Swedish at a level that often suffices as proof of language skills in a citizenship application, but it is no guarantee. The dedicated language test assumed by the new law is not expected to be ready until 2030, and until then the Swedish Migration Agency makes an individual assessment of your evidence. An exam can strengthen your application, but it does not replace a legal review of all the other conditions.

In short:

  • Interest in SFI D exams has risen sharply since the language requirement in the new citizenship rules became known.
  • SFI D corresponds roughly to level B1/B2 on the European framework, but the exam is primarily designed for adult education certificates, not citizenship purposes.
  • The schools themselves warn against treating the exam as an easy shortcut to citizenship.
  • The dedicated language test is not expected until 2030, so the Migration Agency assesses other evidence in the meantime.
  • Your overall situation, identity, residence period and conduct decide the application, not only the language proof.

What is SFI D and what does the exam show?

SFI, Swedish for immigrants, ends with course D, the most advanced level. The course and exam show that you can understand and use Swedish in everyday life, working life and society, roughly corresponding to level B1/B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference. The exam contains written and oral parts and is graded pass or fail for each part.

Most important to understand: the exam is built to provide a formal certificate within adult education. It was not designed as a citizenship test, and it does not test knowledge of society. A pass is therefore strong but not automatic evidence in a citizenship assessment.

Why is demand for the exam rising?

When the new citizenship rules with requirements in Swedish and civic knowledge became known, many people who already speak Swedish began signing up for SFI D exams. The logic is simple: if you already speak fluent Swedish, you want paper that proves it, rather than waiting for a future state test.

At the same time, the schools themselves warn against treating the exam as an easy shortcut. Places are limited, the exam requires preparation even for fluent speakers, and a failed result gives no certificate at all. For someone who has never studied SFI or whose Swedish is below that level, the exam is probably not the right first step.

Does the exam count as language proof?

The short answer is: often yes, but not always. The dedicated language test assumed by the new legislation is not expected to be ready until 2030. During the transition period, the Swedish Migration Agency assesses language skills based on the evidence available, for example SFI grades, exam certificates, upper secondary grades in Swedish or otherwise documented knowledge. The assessment is individual and made in each case.

This means a passed SFI D certificate normally strengthens the application, but the agency may still ask about the evidence: its age, scope and how well it matches the required level. If you have several types of evidence, present them together.

Three pitfalls to know about

  • The exam is not a citizenship test. It shows language ability, not civic knowledge, and it is not calibrated to the level in the Citizenship Act.
  • Requirements vary with age. The requirements in Swedish and civic knowledge do not apply to all applicants in the same way, so check what applies to your age and situation before booking an exam.
  • Other conditions carry equal weight. Identity, residence period and conduct must be met no matter how good your language certificate is.

What can you do now?

Start by mapping the language evidence you already have: old SFI grades, exam certificates, school records or employer references where Swedish is part of the work. Collect the documents early, including those you think may not be needed, since requests for additional information extend processing times. An assessment of your entire application can then show whether an SFI D exam genuinely adds anything, or whether your time and money are better spent elsewhere.

If you want to know what applies in your case, it is wise to speak with a migration lawyer before booking an exam.
